“The Amy Machine”-Work in Progress Report #2

Sometimes you get a gift/blessing that you don’t recognize at the time.  Or aren’t ready for.

Then, one brilliant day, ( for me last Saturday, and a new moon! ), the gift reveals itself.  And you end up giggling with the perfection and timing. (well, that’s what I did!).

My project- a large 4 panel (5′ x 7′) fabric/linocut/assemblage piece- “The Man Who Couldn’t Hear Orange”, has been languishing for a long time.  Blogged here that it was time to take control and finish this.  For feng shui reasons alone!  See earlier blog…

One of my tools is an older sewing machine–I don’t hand quilt-I use the machine to make quilt type marks to solidify the structure.  So excited to get started.  Then, the machine begins to cough up thread/snarl/jam.  Horrors!  My newer machine can’t make the marks I need!  No $$$ at this time to fix it.

Then!  The Amy Machine!  My friend decided to give me this over a year ago, because she felt I needed it.  It is an “all the bells and whistles” kind of tool.  I hadn’t had the energy to explore it.  Wasn’t sure it was what I should be using.

Saturday!  Took out the manual and after 1/2  hour got the thing bobbined and threaded.  Computer selected. And what is the upshot?  It is perfect for all the things I have been dreaming of making this past year.  When I was too ill to work at all.  I needed “the art before the force”?  Sorry, punning can be vile to some.

Called Amy-who was very happy-and kept reminding me it is my machine-not the “Amy Machine”.  What we call and name things/people/situations is extremely important. Haven’t decided on my new machine’s name.  (OK, I do name some equipment-my current computer is Minerva.  My music XHD is Calliope.)  What is the name of the Fate who draws out the threads of life?  Love the internet–Clotho! Kind of apt for a sewing machine.  Also called the Norns.  The Daughters of Necessity.

So, If you are stuck-artistically/personally/physically-et ceterally- don’t give up before the miracle!

Have a great time doing something today!

The Man Who Couldn’t “Hear” Orange!

Good Day to all of you!

Made a decision to finish this long standing project.  It has been hanging in my studio space for longer than I care to admit.

Have you ever been waylaid by life? I seem to have had a pattern of getting a tremendous artistic roll-ideas-time-energy! Then “something happens”.  It has been mostly matters of health and family in my case that have precluded my forward progress.  Do men do this?

Time to break out of this old story.  We are always in the middle of real life. Some events do stop one cold-for a while.  I was looking at a very large canvas of mine yesterday.  Remembering the circumstances in which I made it.  Very ill at the time-could only stand up for minutes at a time.  BUT! I really wanted to finish it.  And I did.

Found new resolve.  Hope this inspires away some of your excuses, too.  Let me know-we can all use the encouragement.

The Man Who Couldn’t “Hear” Orange was inspired by a story my father told of a man from the neighborhood.  For more detail pix: go to my website :   http://www.hladikvoss.com/prints.html

Go to Portfolio> It is under the Tactile Print list on the left.  Will be posting more as I finish sections.  The “man” model is my husband, Richard.

Feel free to ask me questions!

Coming soon! another project needing the final touches.  “Prom”  a video/installation piece.  I’ve even shown this in performance. ( Many thanks to Mary Ellen Croteau, and to Art on Armitage- Chicago, Illinois!). Need to get the “movie” version on YouTube, and finish editing the live version.  Then get  it on my website.  Yes, there are some pix on the website-under Tactile Prints!
